You can list names of people like David, Saul, Solomon, Adam, Eve or from the New Testament Joseph, Mary, Jesus, as men and women of renown in the Bible, but I wonder how many have heard, read or recall the name Shammah (of Agee). Shammah was not only listed among the 30 Mighty Men of David in 2 Chronicles 23:82 Chronicles 23:8

8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go out on the sabbath: for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses.
WP-Bible pluginclose, he held the distinction of be listed in David’s top 3 of the Mighty Men.
Others on the list of 30 performed amazing feats, such as
- Abishai – picked up his spear against 300 and killed them – he was not among the 3
- Benaiah – killed the 2 sons of Ariel of Moab, went into a pit to kill a lion, and plucked out a giant spear from an equally large Egyptian warrior – he was not among the 3
Of the 3 distinguished Mighty Men
- Josheb Basshebeth – fought victoriously against 800 – seemingly by himself
- Eleazar – defied the Philistines and in 1 battle, he fought against them so long, that when it was over, he could not release the grip on his sword
So you might be wondering what it was that Shammah, the son of Agee, did. Here’s what it says, “The Philistines had gathered together into a troop, where there was a plot of ground full or lentils; and the people had fled from the Philistines. But he stood in the middle of the plot and defended it, and killed the Philistines; and Yahweh worked a great victory.” Of the accounts listed, there seemingly was less accomplished by this man than the others, however, he… was honored both by God and by David.
So, what is your lentil field?
What is it that you need to take up battle for?
That seemingly small thing in the eyes of others, but God is saying – your battle is here! Rise and fight!
Maybe, it is for your wife’s heart. Maybe it is time to say no to your kids behavior, that you’ve been ignoring for sometime. Maybe it’s time to rise up against the Internet and what you’ve been allowing into your home. Maybe it’s sharing the Gospel with that family member or co-worker, where fear has prevented you from doing so.
The world may shout, “Com’on, it’s just a lentil field”, but to the Lord this is no small battle AND He stands ready to bring victory.
The battle is come and all of heaven stands with you to fight – will you pick up the sword, and be counted among the Mighty Men / Women of God?
